REGULATIONS AND PROJECTIONS
From May 2022, new vehicles will have to be equipped with safety features such as the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) and the advanced emergency braking system. (source)
But how long will it realistically take for the entire European car fleet to be replaced with vehicles equipped with ISA? Let's see the statistics in Italy.
Almost 2 million new cars are registered annually (from 2014 to 2019). In 2022, out of 40 million cars in circulation, it is estimated that only 2 million will be equipped with the ISA system. That’s 5% of the total. At the current rate of growth (although the economic crisis resulting from Covid-19 could negatively affect the trend) we are talking about 20 years at least.

CAR FLEET SENIORITY
statistics
2018
This is the situation updated to 2018: almost 50% of cars are over 10 years of age.
ROAD ACCIDENTS
data
PEDESTRIANS INVOLVED
In Italy in 2017 there were 174,933 road accidents with injuries to people, a slight decrease compared to 2016, during which we had 3,378 victims (people who died within 30 days of the event) and 246,750 injured.
Among the victims, pedestrians are increasing (600, + 5.3%) and above all motorcyclists (735, + 11.9%) while the deceased car drivers are almost stable (1,464, -0.4%); mopeds are declining (92, -20.7%) and so are cyclists (254, -7.6%).
Among the most frequent wrong behaviors are distraction while driving, failure to comply with right of way and speeding (overall 40.8% of cases). The most sanctioned violations of the Highway Code are speeding, failure to use safety devices and the active use of mobile phones while driving.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO A COUNTRY?
LET'S TAKE ITALIAN STATISTICS AS AN EXAMPLE STATISTICS IN ITALY
statistica italia
Based on the estimates of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for 2010 and revalued in 2017 based on the Istat index of consumer prices, the total social cost for road accidents with personal injury is quantified as approximately 19.3 billion euros, equal to 1.1% of the national GDP.

20 years
It is the expected time for the total replacement of the car fleet in Italy, to have a total and homogeneous coverage of vehicles equipped with ISA
In 20 years, we can estimate a total of
50 / 60,000 people
who will lose their lives on the roads.

-
€ 1.503.990
Is the social cost estimated in a study commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport: each death on the roads costs our society over one and a half million euros. Besides the incalculable cost in pain to those who lose a loved one. Therefore, we can estimate, in the next 20 years, a social cost of about
€ 75.199.500.000
